Elecrical Question: Are 200 amp service cables OK with a 225 breaker? Will the breaker trip at max amps?
Purchasing a new house and trying to determine if this is a real problem or something to be corrected?
This home apparently passed codes inspection. Don't know if that means it actually conforms though. Lines underground to house.
Privately hired home Inspector is bringing this up as an issue. Cables have 4/OH written on them.
While there are additional safety levels built into most devices having equipment that is not rated to the same level is a formula for problems.
That said it is not unusual in my area for the power company to bring in power lines that would be rated less then you could use in your home. They can get away with this for several reasons:
1. It is their equipment. If it burns out because the cable melted before the breaker tripped it is at their expense.
2. If it burns out in the middle of a service conduit or in the air if it is overhead wires it is less likely to burn down your home than a wire that burns out within your walls.
3. Conductors that are run as overhead service have a higher rating than wires in a pipe or within a cable. This is because the rating for a conductor is primarily due to the insulation type and when it will fail. A wire that is run in the middle of the air may not pose a problem even if the insulation comes off completely. Also in the air the insulation has a chance to cool in a way that it can't in a conduit or cable. It therefore takes longer to fail.
I would say it depends upon the situation and this is too little information on which to make a judgment. While answers here are good for backround information you are not going present an answer here in a court or base your purchase on something said here. Common main breaker sizes are 100, 150 and 200 for residential service. I have also seen 60, 125, and your 225 but they are unusual. Breakers should be the weakest link in a system so that they go first as I started saying, if they are not it is an indication, at the least, of a problem.
You are proceeding correctly by having an electrical review of the situation.
