How can a pin be 'tangential'to the shaft surface?
Tapered circular pins can be used to restrain shaft-mounted members from both axial and rotary movement. The pin fits snugly in a reamed tapered hole that is perpendicular to the shaft axis and either radial or tangential to the shaft surface. A number of straight pins that grip by deforming elastically or plastically when driven into straight holes are commercially available.
Another question: Does 'straight pins' in last sentence refer to 'tapered circular pin'? That is, they often go a large number together to function?
That does sound weird, the pin (and hole) would be radial to the shaft, not tangential. Unless there is some part of that particular pin that would rest against the outside of the shaft, like a pull ring or something, but that still seems like an odd way to describe that.
Yes, the straight pin is the general type of thin, straight rod used as a pin. Tapered circular refers to the cross section, which can be tapered. It would be a type of straight pin. And large number doesn't mean you use several of them at one connection, it means there are several varieties available to choose from.
