What wide angle and telephoto lens is best for a beginning photojournalist?
I am purchasing a Cannon Rebel T1i and I have been told that the 18-55mm lens that comes with the kit is no good. So I am looking for an economical wide angle and telephoto lens. Any Photographers out there that could give me some suggestions? I've been looking at a 75-300mm f 4.0-5.6 for a telephoto but I'm still not sure what to invest in. Please give reasons why your choice is the best, thanks.
The lens is fine, Canon have a balancing act to perform, though - they want to supply a lens to a 'beginner/hobbyist' camera to get people to buy them - but they have to do it economically. The same goes for all manufacturers.
At the same time, they can't give you a lens that is no good. Anyway, that doesn't answer your question.
Photojournalists have a habit of carrying two bodies with a lens on each(and a couple of flashes etc). An increasing number of modern day journo's have a wide/normal zoom and a telephoto zoom. Your kit lens and a 70-200mm are good ranges. The difference between your lens(es) and photojournalists is the speed of them.
They run larger maximum apertures. And there's the rub. Cost.
You'd be paying $1300 for a Canon 24-70 f/2.8 and $1300-$1800 for a Canon 70-200 f/2.8 without or with Image Stabilization to get the speed they require. Sigma and Tamron will offer cheaper alternatives, of course.
You could ramp up the ISO on your camera to keep your shutter speeds high enough with your kit lens and the other lens you choose (and get away with it) but I doubt you can get away with only one body - things happen too fast for you to be able to change lenses at a moment's notice. The flashguns are pretty much essential, too.
If, by beginning photojournalist, you mean 'bit of a hobby because I see a load of celebs' then you're good to go. If, however, you're being paid to get results then you should consider ways of raising the capital to get a higher grade pair of bodies and faster lenses.
Five Tips for Creative Photography with Canon Wide Angle Lens
Here are some tips to help you achieve those fantastic photographs you are after using your canon wide angle lens. This is great to capture a wider field of view in your photographs. The subject may be the image's focus; however, by using this canon wide angle lens, you can make good use of the background in the picture to add interest. This way the picture will capture a larger story instead of just a photo; for example, in a picture of two children playing on the beach, you may have captured a small fishing boat going past in the background.
In respects to the larger lens, the canon wide angle lens gives you a stronger depth of field. This is great in that it will not only give you a background and foreground, you also have the chance of keeping everything focused. If on the other hand, you were using a bigger lens, you would have to have the aperture more closed. This would mean a slower shutter speed, and having to use a tripod, which is more time consuming. With all that extra messing about, the depth of field may not have the strength it would have with the use of a canon wide angle lens.
The great thing about using a canon wide angle lens is that if taking photo shoots of such things as railroad tracks, a jetty, fence-line things that may stretch into the distance, then by using a wide angle lens will actually give you great photos. This will give you a photo where you may feel like you can actually walk along the railroad track giving strong lines to the picture.
The canon wide angle lens can give another dimension to a picture giving the illusion that things at different distances are further apart than they actually are. The objects at the forefront look smaller, while the background objects may seem a lot more distant.

There is nothing better than getting your camera and taking different photos using your wide angle lens and experimenting to see what sort of pictures you have taken.
