Just built a new wall and want to add outlets. I want to use romex but it is all 2 wire + a ground.?
All of the outlets in my house test positive for a ground, but there is no ground wire to be found at the outlets. How do I connect the romex to the existing wiring without having a ground wire? Should I scrap the romex and just use conduit and match to the existing wiring, or use the romex and ignore the ground wire? The third option I see is to just use GFI outlets and ignore the ground wire. What do you think??
Your existing outlets are 2-wire. Meaning no equipment grounding conductor...You will have to check with a voltmeter, whether your existing outlet box at the tap point of your new circuit is grounded. If its metal and is grounded, run 12/2 with ground from there to your new outlets. The bare ground in the new cable can be attached to the box using a green "ground" screw.
If your existing box is not grounded, install a feed-thru GFCI receptacle in place of the old one, and run your new circuit fed thru the GFCI. This is about all you can do and basically be in compliance with the 2005 National Electrical Code, Art. 406.3. Section D.
If indeed you find that your existing outlet boxes are grounded, I would suggest going back and removing all your old 2-wire recepts, and replace with 3-wire. Attach a 6" piece of Green #12 wire to the recept, and to a green grounding screw in the existing box..
