85 C-10 Detent/TV cable bracket question.?
Fuel in the bowls of carb was percolating. Bought the big 2" phenolic spacer to make sure it doesn't keep happening. My TV cable and throttle cable were on original bracket and had to arch up to get to throttle linkage. I removed the orig. bracket and put on a holley bracket that bolts onto carb stud, keeping cables level. While putting the TV cable thru, i realized that the flanges on the sides of the cable weren't wide enough to hold it into the hole properly. ( either hole was bigger than original bracket or the new bracket was a bit thicker than orig., not letting it thru quite right.) So, when i tried to extend the flanges, one breaks,of course. So i had to use two of those black ratcheting ties that you use to group wires to hold it to the bracket. Question is, does the kickdown actually pull the cable that hard from the bracket, or will this suffice until i can get a replacement? Also,do i have to get a whole new cable, or can you buy the part around the cable w/ flanges?
I believe you'll have to get a new cable, if memory serves you can't just replace the ends. The zip ties should suffice to hold the cable in place. However, if you have a 700R4 transmission, you'll want to make sure the cable is adjusted per factory specs. You have a risk of ruining your transmission with improper TV cable adjustment.
Drum Stands And Drum Trailers
There are various kind of equipments used when working with cables and drum stands can be used when dealing with cable installation.
Some of them are actually made from aluminium to reduce as much as possible the weight.
They are very useful for the stores location or even when the drum is changed on a more regular basis as it also has wheels on the base which make it easier to cart the drum around. On top of that, they have a large base that makes them stable and very easy to set up. The shaft of the drum stand is in fact fitted with slide bearings for an easy revolution and locking collars to improve steadiness. The hydraulic jacks in this drum stand even have chrome plated pistons for a better corrosion resistance.
Ratchet operated cable drum stand on the other hand are designed to avoid the problems associated with hydraulic ram type drum stands with the use of a ratchet mechanism to lift the shaft vertically. So instead of actually pumping the hydraulic ram, you simply need to turn the mechanical lever which is a lot easier.
The roller drum stand is in comparison with the others, one of the simplest types. As it has no brake mechanism though, care should be taken when handling it. It can be very useful in a depot for the measuring of cable length for example.
If you need to carry the equipment, using a drum trailer is the best thing to do. Depending on the size and weigh of the drum stand you will need to carry, you will need a different drum trailer. They are designed to be towed behind a car or a small van. The drum is raised and lowered by using a hand winch that is geared in order to reduce the operator fatigue. The trailer is supplied with drum locking collars to secure the equipment. It is important to check that all cable drum trailers are CE marked and comply with the latest standards. Having road suspensions on the trailer is a must that will be very useful and appreciated when using it.
It is very important to keep in mind to use rubber insulated gloves, arc flash protection and insulated tools when working with cables. That is why specific equipment like live line equipment, cable preparation tools and cable stripping tools can be found easily.
