Wiring a non fused 60 amp disconnect switch for electric water heater?
The wiring for my water heater runs from the circuit breaker to my disconnect switch to my electric water heater. Inside the disconnect switch box are 6 connection points. 2 are clearly labled grounds. 2 are labled "line" and 2 are labled "load." I screwed / connected the black wires to the "load" connection points. I screwed / connected the green wires to the grounds. I then tied the white wires directly to one another instead of connecting to the "line" connection points. Is this correct? The electrician was going to charge me $300 to do this. I picked up the disconnect switch for under $10.
You clearly have a black/white/green wiring system from both directions here. The line coming into the disconnect box from the breaker should have one each of the three wire colors. The black goes to one line screw, the white goes to the other screw and if there's a ground bar then put the green wire to that, if not connect it with the green ground wire coming from the heater unit. Then from the heater unit, one black wire goes to the load screw opposite the other black wire, the white wire goes to the other load screw opposite the other white wire and you're done. When you flip the switch both sides break, which is the way it should be. Just out of curiousity, how did you determine this is a 60 amp box if there are no fuses? If there are places for fuses, you should be using 30 amp fuses. The two elements on water heaters don't run at the same time, ever. They only need 30 amps to cover them.
