what is with the time period for current readings on a multimeter?

in physics lab we have left multimeters that are set on volts and current attached to the circuit for long periods of time and didnt have problems.

but now im seeing this 15 sec intervals and such for current readings in some multimeters. what is up with that? does this mean i can leave a multimeter attached anymore like we did in lab?

here is a link to a multimeter that has a link to the manual that states its current info. sorry lol

This is generally only an issue when measuring relatively large currents, and is due to heating of the current shunt.
In the manual for the meter you are talking about it says:

"When the measured current is 5A, continuous
measurement is allowed.
When the measured current is between 5A-10A,
continuous measurement 10 seconds and interval
more than 15 minutes."

So if you are measuring less than 5A then you can leave attached for long periods of time. But if you are measuring more than 5A you can not leave it for long periods, however, if you used an external shunt with better cooling then you could do long measurements.
